Epigenetic Model

imagen1.jpg

Based upon Ken Wilber´s AQAL (Integral Pshychology) and Don Beck´s Stratified Model (Spiral Dynamics).

Epigenetic: evolutionary process of integration and matring of hoiman psyche through interaction with the environment. It´s not used as in biological DNA modulation, for example, but as in phychology (Jean  Piaget, Erik Ericson).

This Model encompasses three Areas (As AQAL)

Prepersonal: Orange. It´s the foundation of the structure. Responds to the question “What am I?” It´s relatively inmature stages.

Personal: divided in two sub areas. a) Conventional (level 4). Yellow. Centered upon roles, funtions and norms. Responds to question: “how do I do my task?” b) Posconventional. Blue. Level 5 or protagonistic. Centered upon identity. responds to question: “Whom am I?”. Level 6. Existential or Design. Question: “Which is my meaning in life? Towards what do I go?”. Creating a way of life where the level 5 can find itself “at home”.

Transpersonal Area: Purple. Level 7 and above. Mystic, Cosmic Consciousness.

Epigenetic Model is useful for explainig, as a map, different “territories”. Individual, interpersonal as well as social scenarios.

Each level has a particular worldview, way of organizing itself, defensive mechanisms , self-notion, moral, type of object relations, an so forth (lines of development).

In Spiral Dynamics, emergent properties appear as the Self reaches upper levels, as  Second Tier thinking (Consciousness and cognitive properties belonging to 2nd Tier levels, Yellow, Turquoise and above). From Level 5 on (Epigenetic Model) 2nd Tier thinking enables the Self to understand simultaneity of levels working together.

Each level has a specific way of coping with conflict, or rather we could say to manifest conflict. Only from level 4 and above we could find mature enough structures as to cope with conflict with a glimpse of harmony.

Level 0: Disruption. No focus, no control. As in an accident or trauma.

Level 1: Violence. Similar as 0, but can have focus. No Situational Consciousness.

Level 2: There is Situational Consciousness, but lacks appropiate control. Transdgrssion of limits and norms.

Level 3: Rivalry. there is both Situational Consciousness and control. The norms are observed. But bad feeling make the center of the situation be to win instead of resolving

Level 4: Competence. “Fair play”. Respects norms and emotional issues are contained. The scenario can focus on “the task” instead on the participants.

Level 5: Collaboration. Everything that Level 4 has, it has, plus the possibility to integrate individual with situational needs. Its more important to grow and lear than to win.

Level 6: Sinergy. “The whole is more than the sum of the parts”. The parties involved can find their way towards harmony. Conflict is viewed as an opportunity to find creative solutions. Triple, ecological winning attitude.

This Model has inherent conclusions. Understanding those conclusions influences both individual and interpersonal lives. One of these conclusions find its expression through what I call “Epigenetic training”.

Colours of levels are based upon Light spectrum, as in the rainbow. Lower spectrum area (as orange) colours represent less developed zones, whereas upper bad colours (such as blue, purple), are associated with more sophisticated, developed areas.
